Iakovos Kambanellis and his work in Vienna

“One hundred artists – One Hundred Works of Freedom” – a multimedia exhibition in the Diplomatic Academy

Elena Strubakis presents a further project in cooperation with the Diplomatic Academy Vienna from July 22nd to 24th, 2021 in honor of Iakovos Kambanellis and his only prose work „Freedom came in May” (English version in Kedros Athen, „Mauthausen“). One hundred artists bring the book to life.

Artists and schoolchildren were invited to reinterpret each of the 37 chapters of the book. They responded with great commitment and enthusiasm. Each artwork interprets a passage from one of the chapters. The illustrated narrative of this unique and important book will be shown to the public for the first time as a multimedia presentation over three days. The exhibition of 100 works of art in one place on the subject of National Socialism and the Mauthausen concentration camp has not been seen before.

The event “One hundred Artists – One hundred Works of Art of Freedom“ is under the aegis of Christoph Cardinal Schönborn, Chief Rabbi Jaron Engelmayer, Bishop Michael Chalupka, Metropolitan Arsenios Kardamakis, as well as Federal Minister Alexander Schallenberg and Mayor Michael Ludwig.

On the occasion of the 100th birthday of the Mauthausen survivor and famous writer, 2022 was declared „Iakovos Kambanellis Year“ by the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sport.

The initiator Elena Strubakis says about the exhibition: “In my opinion it is spectacular that so many artists have created images for a text. It is unusual for the artists to attempt to describe their pictures. We see the text through the language of images, shapes and colors and compositions. All of this is wonderfully exciting.“
